New VES Training Prop Built At BAVFC
The BAVFC has taken their fire training to the next level with the construction of a fully furnished 12′ x 14′ second floor single bedroom complete with a full size window at the Forest Hill annex.
It is the intent to use this room for what is known in the fire service as “Vent, Enter, Search” or “VES”. When adding a smoke machine and life size mannequins into the mix firefighters can train on various methods of ventilating the space, entering and exiting the space and with the added furniture obstacles train on various search and rescue techniques for victims. In addition firefighters can practice their hose stretches up and around stairwells and hallways.
Many thanks go out to FF Beichler, Sgt. Dannenfesler, Lt. Price, and FF Wilhelm for spending a large portion of this past Saturday morning at the annex completing the construction. A company drill introducing the new prop was held this past Tues taught by Sgt. Winchester and Sgt. Dannenfelser.
Creating this prop brings a more lifelike training environment to the firefighter and is as close to the real thing as possible. This is important because firefighters can hone and develop their basic VES techniques while learning new ones.
It doesn’t matter if you’re the rookie or the 25yr veteran continued training on your job duties and being as prepared as possible is critical to a successful fireground operation.
What’s coming next? A roof prop is currently in development and should be completed soon. If you want this type of company training experience think seriously about joining. You can read more about becoming a member at www.bavfc.org/join. RG
