BAVFC 1890 Activity History Highlights Early Bel Air Fires and Official Organization of the Fire Company
The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company’s 1890 activity history marks the beginning of organized fire protection in the Bel Air community. The year included a documented dwelling fire before a fire department existed, the official organization of the Bel Air Fire and Salvage Company, and early fire responses that helped establish the foundation for what would become a long tradition of service.
On June 18, a dwelling fire was reported on Office Street at the Cahen dwelling. Curtains and small items were burned. At the time of the incident, no organized fire department existed in Bel Air to respond, underscoring the need for a formal fire protection organization in the community.
That need was addressed later that year. On September 13, the Bel Air Fire and Salvage Company was officially organized, creating a local organization dedicated to fire response, salvage work, and protection of life and property in Bel Air.
On November 24, the newly organized company responded to a dwelling fire on Hickory Avenue at the Fulton property, which adjoined Evan’s & Co. Drug Store. Chief Cline served as acting officer.
The year closed with a Christmas Day fire on December 25. Crews responded to a dwelling fire on Baltimore Street at the Munnikhuysen property. The structure was vacant, and the fire was listed as arson. Frank Bateman served as acting officer.
The 1890 activity history represents a defining year in Bel Air’s fire service history. From a June fire that occurred before any department was available to respond, to the official organization of the Bel Air Fire and Salvage Company in September, the year marked the start of organized fire protection for the community.
Residents are encouraged to follow BAVFC for department history, fire prevention information, and opportunities to support or volunteer with the company.
