Station History
In the early 2000s, the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company began evaluating the need for additional fire stations in the outer areas of its first-due territory. Rapid population growth, increased commercial development, and heavier traffic patterns were making it more difficult for apparatus responding from the Hickory Avenue station to maintain optimal response times.
To address these challenges, the fire company began exploring potential sites for new stations in the Emmorton and Fountain Green areas.
On January 26, 2007, the fire company entered into two 25-year lease agreements with Harford County for properties that could support future fire station development. One location was near the county’s Facilities and Operations building on Route 543 in the Fountain Green area. The second property was located on Patterson Mill Road at the intersection of Route 924, just south of Bel Air.
This agreement represented a significant milestone in the company’s long-term plan to expand coverage by establishing two additional fire stations.
The fire company prioritized development of the Patterson Mill station first, with the Fountain Green station planned to follow. To support the new facility, a recruitment campaign was launched to encourage residents living near the future station to join the department.
Between 2009 and 2010, discussions continued regarding funding and construction plans for the Patterson Mill facility. In September 2011, a major step forward was achieved when the Harford County Government agreed to construct and fully fund the fire station. Upon completion and dedication of the building, ownership of the station would be transferred to the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company.
Although the county oversaw construction, the fire company maintained final approval authority over the design plans and building layout, much of which had already been developed prior to the county assuming responsibility for the project.
Groundbreaking for the Patterson Mill Fire Station took place on December 11, 2011.
Construction lasted nearly a year, and the station was officially dedicated on November 10, 2012. Immediately following the dedication ceremony, the station was placed into service with an engine, a medic unit, and a utility vehicle assigned to the facility.
Today, the Patterson Mill Fire Station plays an essential role in maintaining effective emergency response coverage for the growing southern portion of the department’s service area.
